(excerpt from "Waiting on Arleen" monologue)
A lesser man, or perhaps a saner man might have given up on the idea of ever getting back together with Arleen at this point. I’ll grant you the fact that, generally speaking, when a woman introduces you to her fiancee it is generally a pretty good indication that she’s not interested. But, I couldn’t help but think that, in this particular case there were some extenuating circumstances.
Namely, the two and a half weeks Arleen had been coming in for coffee. I fell in love all over again and I was sure that Arleen had too. It was the little things—the things that I could never describe to you. The look in her eye, her smile of course, the little touch that she gave me when she said goodbye that made me think that she was right there with me every step of the way.
It made me think that maybe, just maybe, this whole thing about bringing Tom in to meet me and sending me the invitation in the mail was her way of saying, “Hey, this whole wedding thing is real. If you’re going to do something about it, you better act fast.” And, so when Arleen came in for coffee yesterday, I was ready.
