The Great Big Super Huge Hullabaloo Adventure Show Manifesto!

I just wrapped up the first episode of the Great Big Super Huge Hullabaloo Adventure Show and posted it for all the world to see. It's a little rough around the edges but I'm ok with that. This isn't meant to be a slick, major-network, high-budget sort of deal. It's home-made, just like our music.

With a little luck and a lot more work I believe that I can achieve my goal of creating a little show that is something like Mr.-Rodgers-meets-Bear-Grylls-in-an-episode-of-Flight-of-the-Concords. Yes, it's a lofty goal when you've got a $0 budget, a couple cameras and last year's version of iMovie but those are my favorite kinds of challenges. As Mark Twain said, "Why not go out on a limb. That's where all the fruit is!"

A hundred years ago, when we first started making music for kids, we took a look at what was out there and, with a small handful of exceptions, we were pretty saddened. Mostly, it was big corporations putting out a million variations of the same sugary-sweet, singing hamster. Now, thankfully, that has changed quite a bit. Kid's music heroes like Dan Zanes lead the charge and now there is a great variety of quality kid's music.

In many ways, the same could be said of the current state children's programming on TV. I know that there are some amazing shows out there but way too many of them have devolved into the television equivalent of that same singing hamster. It seems to me that, with a couple of inexpensive cameras and the World Wide Web as our network, we (and by we I mean you, me and anyone else with the gumption) can provide a fun, creative alternative to the big network shows.

So, here it is, my first attempt at all of that. . . The Great Big Super Huge Hullabaloo Adventure Show: Episode 1.

Singing in the Rain!

A Big thanks to everyone that came out to the San Diego Botanical Gardens Family Fun Night Concert. It was a great crowd and you couldn't ask for a more beautiful setting on a hot summer night. The big surprise of the evening was RAIN!! We sang the Itsy Bitsy Spider and then down came the rain. We sang in the rain right up to the point where we started to worry about getting shocked. Aside from getting a little soaked, it was a great night. We're excited to return on August 26!! I posted some pictures here on the website and on our facebook page.

Lyrics and Guitar Chords

I got a couple of requests this week from parents that want to create their own family Hullabaloo sing-along. They requested the guitar chords for some of our songs. I typed up all the lyrics and chords for the Tall as a Tree album and posted them on the media section of our website. To get there just click the "media" button to the right and download the Word file. Enjoy!!

Superhero Birthday

I played at a great birthday party this weekend in Dana Point. The party was for a 6 year old boy and the theme was "Superheroes." My favorite part was the craft they had set up where each kid got to make their own superhero cape. They used colorful pieces of cloth for the cape and decorated it with stick-on stars and letters spelling their names. To top it off they also had paper masks they decorated in the same way. It made me especially glad that I had written Supersuit!

Back From DC

I just got back from a quick trip to DC and a show at Jammin' Java. The crowd wasn't quite as big as the last time we were there but they were fun and enthusiastic. It was amazing to fly across the country to play and have people in the audience that knew our songs. Very cool!

Working Backwards Gets Things Done

Career advisors often say that you should imagine where you want to be in 5 years, 10 years and 20 years and then work backwards to the present day. That gives you a clear indication of what steps you need to take right now.

A couple months ago, I booked the North Coast Rep for a CD release party on May 30. I wanted to have a completed CD in-hand, new stickers, new posters and Hullabaloo t-shirts all ready on that date. When I got off the phone with the theater I shook my head and said, "What have I done? This is impossible!" At that moment, none of those projects were even near completion.

It is now 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 28th. The UPS man just pulled away having delivered the new posters. The Fedex man delivered the shirts today at noon. Yesterday the UPS man delivered 1000 copies of the new CD and the new Hullabaloo stickers.

Sure, I cut it a little close this time but it all worked out. There's something about setting a goal and then working backwards that really illuminates the path!
